Descent into chaos
Smooth, glassy water suddenly becomes a foaming mass of white water at these rapids, formed partly from the ruins of one of the many forges and mills which dotted the gorge between the sixteenth century and the coming of steam in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
