- The Painted Houses of Burano - Violet
No visit to the Venice Lagoon is complete without going to the small island of Burano with its gaily painted houses, each one a different colour from its neighbours. There are many theories surrounding why the houses got their colourful façades. My favourite is so that fishermen could find their way home in the thick fogs that envelop the island from time to time.
